Towards a Better Future E2Ws, India-2024

Five years ago, it was rare to see electric two-wheelers on Indian streets. In 2024, it is not so anymore. The chances of passing a few E2Ws on every single journey one makes in a tier 1 or tier 2 city is not just feasible but an absolute certainty. People are increasingly warming up to the idea of exhaust and noise-free two-wheelers, which are also pocket-friendly in terms of fuel consumption. Let’s look at how E2Ws are performing in 2024.

According to the latest insights from cnbctv18 (report by Car Dekho Group), the Indian electric two-wheeler (E2W) market has experienced impressive growth of 44% YoY in August 2024, driven by increasing consumer demand for sustainable, safer, and more intelligent mobility solutions. Besides Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities, Tier 3 cities are also contributing to this growth. Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh have emerged as the top five states contributing to the highest number of E2W searches online on the Car Dekho website, a leading car sales website in India. These states represent key markets where the transition to electric two-wheelers has gained good momentum.
From a consumer’s perspective, electric two-wheelers are delivering significant savings in fuel and maintenance. The cost of charging an electric two-wheeler is far less than the cost of petrol, which translates into lower operational expenses. According to estimates, the cost of running an electric two-wheeler can be 80-90% lower than a petrol-powered counterpart, primarily due to the much lower cost of electricity compared to fuel.

Moreover, the maintenance costs of electric two-wheelers are considerably lower. Without complex internal combustion engine components, electric two-wheelers have fewer moving parts, reducing the frequency and cost of repairs.

Another important benefit is the reduction in dependence on fossil fuels. As India aims to transition towards cleaner energy sources, the shift from petrol to electricity for two-wheelers plays a critical role in decreasing the nation’s reliance on imported oil and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2024, electric two-wheelers in India are not only performing well financially but also making meaningful contributions to environmental sustainability. With strong government support, reduced operational costs, and increasing eco-consciousness, the adoption of electric two-wheelers is expected to continue to rise, driving India toward a greener, more financially sustainable future. As the market matures and infrastructure improves, electric two-wheelers will undoubtedly play an essential role in India’s transition to cleaner, more efficient urban mobility.
