Bharat is rapidly advancing its efforts to transition to electric vehicles (EVs) as part of its strategy to combat air pollution and embrace cleaner energy alternatives. In a significant step, the Government of Bharat has launched the PM Electric Drive Revolution for Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme, allocating Rs.109 billion (approximately $1.3 billion) to accelerate EV adoption across the country. This initiative aims to increase the accessibility and adoption of electric vehicles, reinforcing Bharat’s commitment to sustainability.

The scheme provides Rs.36.79 billion in subsidies across various EV categories, including e-two-wheelers, e-three-wheelers, e-ambulances, and e-trucks. Bharat’s two-wheeler market, which has witnessed a surge in demand for electric scooters and bikes, is expected to benefit significantly. Leading EV two-wheeler manufacturers are poised for growth as government incentives drive further adoption. In tier-1 cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, electric two-wheelers are gaining popularity due to their eco-friendly nature and cost-effectiveness.

A key highlight of the PM E-DRIVE scheme is its emphasis on e-ambulances. With Rs.5 billion allocated for their deployment, the government is prioriti-zing not only emission reduction but also the enhancement of critical healthcare services. E-ambulances exemplify the integration of EVs into essential services, contributing to a more sustainable healthcare system.

Another crucial focus of the scheme is replacing high-emission trucks with electric alternatives. Trucks contribute significantly to Bharat’s air pollution, and this transition could bring a major reduction in emissions. The government has allocated Rs.5 billion to support this shift, along with additional subsidies for scrapping older, polluting vehicles. This initiative aligns with Bharat’s broader efforts to modernize its transport sector and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Beyond promoting EV purchases, the government is investing heavily in infra-structure to facilitate the transition. A substantial Rs.43.91 billion has been earmarked for procuring 14,028 electric buses for public transport agencies. These buses will play a pivotal role in reducing urban pollution and providing sustai-nable public transportation solutions.

Although EV adoption in Bharat is still in its early stages—electric cars currently account for less than 2% of total vehicle sales—the government aims to achieve a 30% market share by 2030. By incentivizing manufacturers, consumers, and public agencies, the PM E-DRIVE scheme is set to be a key driver in Bharat’s green transformation, reducing the country’s carbon footprint and improving air quality for millions.
